Mom’s Holiday Punch (Easy Hawaiian Punch + Sprite Recipe)

A holiday punch that’s been in my family for generations — bright, fizzy, and made with just Hawaiian Punch and Sprite. Simple, nostalgic, and always a hit with kids and adults alike.

Why This Recipe Matters

Every holiday growing up, my mom made punch. Nothing fancy—just two ingredients mixed in a perfect two-to-one ratio: Hawaiian Punch and Sprite. It wasn’t originally hers, though, it was my grandmother’s recipe. A simple mix that became part of the season. And now, for forty-two years of holidays, there hasn’t been a single gathering without it.

Mom would pull out her crystal punch bowl and holiday glasses, and I’d watch that bright red liquid swish into the bowl like a signal. And every year, without fail, a small hand (usually mine) would reach for the ladle, followed immediately by:

“Oh—let me get that for you!”

It didn’t matter if she was at the table or in another room—she always knew the moment a child reached for the punch bowl. And it wasn’t just about helping…it was about preventing a red sugar bomb from decorating the tablecloth, our clothes, or anything within reach. That punch stained fast, and she knew it.

So the punch bowl became her responsibility—part tradition, part pride, and part knowing exactly what could happen with a full ladle and little hands.

I may not crave the punch the way I did when I was little, but I still pour myself a glass every holiday. It’s tradition. It tastes like home and the childhood moments that stay with you long after you’ve grown up. And now, as an adult, I’ll admit…it’s pretty great with a splash of Tito’s.

A few years ago, my Aunt Sue gifted me her set of stemmed holiday glasses. Now I serve Grandma’s punch recipe in them. Three generations, woven into one bowl of punch, carried forward year after year.

Some recipes are impressive. Some are complicated. But some hold history. They are memory and legacy in a glass.

Those are the ones worth passing down.

Prepare Your Taste Buds

There’s nothing complicated here, just two ingredients mixed in the perfect proportion:

  • 2 parts Hawaiian Punch
  • 1 part Sprite

That’s it.

No garnish, no muddling, no syrups or fancy ice shapes. This isn’t the kind of punch that shows up on Pinterest or at weddings. This is the punch kids rush toward, adults secretly love, and everyone looks for on the holiday table.

It’s bright, sweet, fizzy, and deeply nostalgic, the kind of thing that might just become tradition in your home, too.

Make a batch, pour it into whatever glasses you have, and serve it with the intention passed down in my family:

For the kids.
Making moments they’ll carry with them.
And traditions that return to holiday tables, year after year.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Use Lemon-Lime Soda of Your Choice: Sprite is classic, but 7UP or Starry work just as well. Any lemon-lime soda will give you that bright, fizzy finish.
  • Adjust the Sweetness: If you prefer the punch less sweet, use diet lemon-lime soda or mix in a splash of soda water to lighten it up.
  • Make It Extra Cold: Freeze some Hawaiian Punch in ice cube trays and use those in the bowl. It keeps the punch cold without watering it down.
  • Turn It Into a Slushy: Mix the punch and Sprite, then freeze half the mixture in a shallow pan. Scrape with a fork for a granita-style punch kids love.
  • Adult Version: Add a splash of Tito’s vodka, or champagne to individual glasses, not the bowl, so everyone can enjoy it their way.

Handy Hints

  • Add the Sprite right before serving: the soda loses its carbonation quickly, so wait until guests arrive (or you’re ready to pour) before mixing it in. This keeps the punch bubbly and bright.
  • Chill everything first: Cold Hawaiian Punch and cold Sprite = colder punch without needing as much ice.
  • Use frozen Hawaiian Punch cubes: Freeze some of the punch in ice trays and use those instead of regular ice to keep the bowl cold without watering it down.
  • Mix in a pitcher for ease of pouring: It’s cleaner, simpler, and makes serving quick.
