Ingredients

Units Scale

Sheet Cake Brownies

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (scooped and leveled)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp table salt
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp Hershey's Natural Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 tbsp Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa Powder
  • 1 cup water

Frosting

  • 12 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Hershey's Natural Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Hershey's Special Dark Cocoa Powder
  • 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 6 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Sheet Cake Brownies

  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt.
  3. In a small glass measuring cup, add buttermilk, eggs and baking soda, whisk to lightly beat eggs and combine.
  4. In a saucepan set over low heat, melt the butter. Next, add the cocoa powders and whisk to combine. Increase the heat to medium, add the water and bring to a boil for 1 minute, whisking periodically. Remove from heat and pour over the flour mixture, stirring until the mixture is slightly cooled and well combined. *Set the saucepan aside, you will use it again for the frosting.
  5. Now, add the buttermilk mixture, folding in and stirring until a uniform batter comes together.
  6. Pour the batter into a 18" x 13" half baking sheet pan and bake for 18-20 minutes.
  7. While the brownies are baking, prepare the frosting.

Frosting

  1. In the now empty saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add in the cocoa powders and whisk to combine. Turn off the heat, add the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla and whisk until smooth.
  2. When the brownies are done baking, set the pan on a cooling rack and pour the frosting over the warm brownies. Use a large offset spatula to spread the frosting evenly over the brownies.
  3. Allow to cool slightly, slice, serve and enjoy!

Notes

•If you do not have buttermilk on hand, you can make what I call, Cheater’s Buttermilk.  Just add 1 tbsp lemon juice or white vinegar to a 1 cup measuring cup and fill it up the rest of the way with milk.  Let stand for 5-10 minutes.
