Why This Recipe Matters

Sometimes you know a recipe is a success simply because a batch of banana chocolate chip muffins disappears faster than you expected—the way good banana muffins always do.

When I made these muffins, the aftermath sounded a bit like a small investigation. Emma privately accused Mikey of eating them all. Mikey immediately blamed Gordon. Gordon didn’t accuse anyone—but he did text me from work to say how good they were.

Cooper, who famously “doesn’t do banana flavored anything” (as he reminded me when I developed my Banana Oat Cookies), wasn’t part of the debate at all.

Safe to say, these muffins didn’t last long.

The dark chocolate chips went in because Emma prefers dark chocolate, but they turned out to be the detail that really makes these muffins stand out. The mix of dark and semisweet chocolate gives them a richer chocolate flavor that works perfectly with the bananas.

They’ve quickly become one of those simple recipes worth keeping on repeat—easy to make, reliably tender, and the kind of muffin people keep reaching for.

Prepare Your Taste Buds

These banana chocolate chip muffins bake up with lightly golden tops and soft, fluffy centers filled with ripe banana flavor and melted chocolate. Using both dark and semisweet chocolate chips adds depth while keeping the sweetness balanced. The result is a tender muffin with rich flavor and just the right amount of chocolate in every bite.

And as it turned out, they didn’t last long enough the first time around to even photograph. After testing the recipe twice, I had to make yet another batch for the post—which meant everyone was pretty happy to see them appear again on the counter.

Recipes like this are the ones I quietly appreciate most—the kind that brings everyone into the kitchen. With two of my children approaching their final years at home, I’m more aware than ever of how quickly time is passing. A house full of family food critics, always ready to taste whatever comes out of the oven—these are the moments I find myself wanting to hold onto just a little longer.

Save the recipe below and see who shows up in your kitchen—and how quickly they disappear.

(To my family: For the many times I pause in the kitchen and feel deep, quiet gratitude as you all come and go—leaving me with a comment, a smile, a kiss on the cheek—I am so lucky to live a life so full. Thank you. Love, Mom)

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups mashed ripe bananas (about 4–5 bananas)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ? cup whole buttermilk, room temperature

Fold-Ins

  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
  • ½ cup dark chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Prep: Heat oven to 350°F. Line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix butter and sugars: In a large bowl, whisk melted butter with brown sugar and granulated sugar until smooth and glossy.
  4. Add eggs and vanilla: Whisk in eggs and vanilla until fully combined.
  5. Add banana mixture: Stir in mashed bananas, lemon juice, and buttermilk until evenly combined.
  6. Combine batter: Add dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Stir gently just until no dry flour remains. Do not overmix.
  7. Fold in chocolate: Gently fold in the semisweet chocolate and dark chocolate chips.
  8. Fill muffin cups: Divide batter evenly among muffin cups, filling each about ¾ full.
  9. Bake: Bake 18–22 minutes, until the tops are domed and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
  10. Cool: Let muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Very ripe bananas produce the best flavor and sweetness.
  • Do not overmix the batter or the muffins may become dense.
  • Store muffins in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Substitutions & Variations

  • Dark & semisweet chocolate chips ? use one type: This recipe uses a mix of dark and semisweet chocolate chips for deeper chocolate flavor, but you can use all of one type if you prefer.
  • Add coconut ? extra texture: Fold in about ½ cup sweetened shredded coconut along with the chocolate chips for a lightly nutty flavor.
  • Chocolate chips ? chocolate chunks: Rough-chopped chocolate bars can be used instead of chips to create larger pockets of melted chocolate.
  • Add nuts ? extra crunch: Stir in about ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans with the chocolate chips.

Handy Hints

  • Use very ripe bananas: Bananas with plenty of brown spots bring the best flavor and natural sweetness to banana chocolate chip muffins.
  • Don’t overmix the batter: Stir just until the flour disappears to keep the muffins soft and tender.
  • Fill muffin cups about ¾ full: This helps the muffins rise properly and creates nicely rounded tops.
  • Let muffins cool briefly before removing: Allow them to rest in the pan for about 5 minutes before transferring to a rack to cool completely and prevent sticking.
